From warehouse to ‘wowhouse’

The dictionary definition of a warehouse is as follows: “A commercial building for use of storage.” However, in the field of renovation, this definition no longer applies. We have seen the transformation of Liverpool’s Albert Docks from the first non-combustible docking building which stored valuable cargo, into Grade I and II listed buildings, drawing millions of visitors a year to its hotel, museum and many restaurants. The news that the original Scotland Yard building is to be turned into a 5 star hotel, with suites of a very un-custodial kind, has raised a few eyebrows. We have seen how English Heritage buildings have been brought back to life, but to take a famous landmark property and convert it into a hotel is a project on a whole different scale. From the unthinkable to the unmissable

Once upon a time there were areas in the UK considered no-go zones. Shuttered shops, boarded up houses, row upon row of vacant, empty dwellings. Property in such areas couldn’t be given away, let alone sold! Then out of the mist arrived the next big boom town.
